Library Collections

This section of our web presence highlights the physical collections of the Wesley Powell Learning Resource Centre. Coupled with our e-resources, our registered users can explore the breadth and diversity of our physical collections to meet their research and information needs.

Reserve Book Collection(RBC)

The Reserve Book Collection houses the prescribed and recommended texts for the Community College and High School programmes. Included in this large collection, are smaller special collections which include:

  ·        West Indies Collection with materials on, by or about the Caribbean

  ·        Past Papers –CSEC, GCE, CCCJ and ECC

  ·        Pamphlets

  ·        Studies

Lending Procedures for RBC

Books from RBC can be borrowed for one (1) hour, three (3)hours, overnight or weekend. Users can borrow two items at a time.

One Hour and Three hours In-house Loans:

1.     Request desired material(s)
2.     Present ID
3.     Library staff will locate item(s) requested.
4.     Write  up RBC Loan slip(s) for items
5.     Item(s) are issued.
6.     Return item(s) after the one hour or three hour periods

Overnight and Weekend Loans

Overnight loans for all students start at 2:30p.m. each day and must be returned by 10:00a.m. the following day for Day students and 5:00p.m. for Evening students. Weekend loans begin on Fridays and these loaned items must be returned on Mondays at the designated times for day and evening students.  The lending procedure for overnight and weekend loans are as follows:

     1.     Request desired material(s)

     2.     Present College ID

     3.     Library staff will locate item(s) requested

     4.     Items will be logged into our Koha online lending system under your registered online library profile

     5.     Items is issued and the returned  date is stamped into the item(s)

    6.     Return item(s) in the returned date.

 A fine of $10.00 per hour is charged for materials kept over the specified time.


Past Papers

Print past papers cannot be borrowed and can either be photocopied or used in-house. Digital copies of CCCJ past papers are available for download on our website.  


General Collection

The General Collection carries fiction and non-fiction books and newspaper clippings from the Gleaner and Jamaica Observer. Books are loaned for a period of two(2) weeks and can be renew on or before the due date. Users are allowed to borrow three books at any one time. The General Collection also includes newspaper clippings which can be photocopied or used in-house.

Lending Procedures for the General Collection

1.     Present books selected and present them at the Circulation Desk along with your College/High School IDs.

2.     The items will be logged into our Koha online lending system under your registered library profile.

3.     Items is issued and the due date is stamped into the item(s)

4.     Return item(s) on or before the due date.

A fine of $10.00 per day is charged for books kept over the time from the General Collection


Reference Collection

The Reference materials are in two sections:

·        Standard reference items such as: encyclopedias, dictionaries and atlases

·        General reference- Subject textbooks

REFERENCE MATERIALS ARE NOT FOR LOAN AND CAN ONLY BE CONSULTED IN THE REFERENCE AREA OF THE LIBRARY


Newspapers, Magazines and Journals

The Gleaner and Jamaica Observer are available at the RBC desk and can only be used in-house. Back issues are stored at the General Collection’s Circulation Desk. Archives copies of magazines and journals are available for in-house use by our users in the Reference Collection.


Media Centre Audio-Visual Collection

The Media Centre’s audio-visual collection includes:

·        VHS cassettes

·        Subject DVDs and CDs

·        Subject audiocassettes

·        Photographs

Access to this collection is only in-house, users can book the media centre to view these archived items. The Media Centre staff is there to guide you.
